Grades in Algebra 3
Student grades are determined by the following formula:

Since this is a senior-level class, I expect students to show responsibility for their learning. Homework will not be graded, but you will be expected to be prepared to present your solutions to designated “Presentation Problems” if called upon. If you are not able to present when called upon, you will receive a 0 for that presentation. You will have at most three opportunities to present per six weeks, and I will keep the two highest of your presentation grades.

The “Problem Sets” are problems that require more in-depth thought and exploration. We will start working on the problems during class, but you will be expected to write up the solutions to be turned in. No late work will be accepted unless it is for an excused absence. Problem sets will be graded on the accuracy and completeness of your solutions.

Grades on quizzes will be by objective on a scale of 0 to 4 — if a quiz contains four objectives, you will receive four grades for that quiz. Each objective in the course will be assessed twice. Your grade for an objective will either be the grade on the second quiz if it is the higher of the two, or an average of the two grades. If you do not achieve a 4 on the second quiz, you may continue to re-take the quiz until (a) you do make a 4 or (b) the six weeks is over. Re-takes must be done outside of class (either before or after school), and you may only do one re-take per day.

Textbook
Because our textbook (College Algebra and Trigonometry, 4th Edition by Lial, Hornsby, and Schneider) is a college-level textbook, it is more expensive than the standard high school textbook. Should you have to replace this book, it will cost you $160. Please be aware of this and treat your textbook accordingly.

Class Rules

  1. Treat other people and their property with respect.
  2. Do not speak when I am speaking.
  3. Do what you are instructed to do when you are instructed to do it.
  4. No personal grooming.
  5. No throwing.

Progress reports will be given to all students at the beginning of the fourth week of each six weeks. In addition, a student’s grades are available to his parent or guardian through InTouch. To register for this program, please contact the counselors’ office.

Make-up Work
I will give you a calendar at the beginning of the six weeks with all of the assignments on it. Almost all of our assignments are out of the book, so if you are absent, you should already know what he missed. In addition, any notes or presentations that I give will be posted on this website. Any handouts or assignments that you did miss, I will put in the “Make-up Work” folder for his class period. You have as many days as you were absent to turn in any make-up work. It is your responsibility to turn in any work missed and make arrangements for any tests or quizzes missed.

Advance notice will be given for tests. This means that even if you are absent the day before the test, you are still expected to be ready for it when you return.

Supply List
The following items are required for class and should be brought every day:

I am available to answer any questions that a parent should have, either by email (smiller5@aisd.net) or by phone through the school receptionist at 682-867-8300. If a parent wishes to meet with me, please contact the counseling office to set up an appointment. My conference period is from 9:15 to 10:45, but I can also meet after school if necessary.
